Lost as a Nation
To search for oneself is like looking for keys already in your hand as you leave the house, or the sunglasses on your head. This notion to “find oneself” is absurd, yet we all feel the need to do it at some point. Think back to the last time you searched for something that was in sight the whole time. What turn of events led you to forget what you were searching for was in your hand? You were probably distracted somewhere between the moment you grabbed your keys and the moment you walked out the door. To find yourself, you simply have to forget the distractions and remember what you are!
We're constantly distracted from our true nature by questions like “what do you want to be?” or a feed of movies and music that instill ideals of materialism. We then spend our whole lives becoming something. In this effort to become or to have, we stray from our true nature. You aren't the job title you hold at work, you aren't a prefix designated by your degree, and you aren't defined by man-made concepts like race. We are animals with a spirit, capable of creating, yet we often consume. We occupy our thoughts with worry about tomorrow, yet we live in the present. It’s no wonder we all feel lost at some point.
To find yourself, clear your life of distractions. Stop listening to external voices and start listening to your inner voice. Let the feeling of joy or the sting in your heart guide your decisions. If you tell someone about a choice you’ve made and they respond with “but what about…” or “yea, but you have to…” or “how are you going to…” recognize that they are living in the future. You must live in the moment. Today, you have money to eat and sleep, so why plague your thoughts with worry about a day ten years down the road? Those preoccupied with tomorrow would rather spend the present moment in misery, doing what they don't enjoy, hoping that one day they may finally enjoy life.
Reclaiming Your Path
Let's imagine for a moment what it might look like to release the sources of misery in your life. If you were to do that right now, how long do you think your resources could support you? During that time, try to live deliberately: avoid over-consumption and needless spending. Instead, discover your purpose and use your unique skills to contribute to your community. If you feel stuck in your current job, remember that leaving is always an option. As humans, our ability to overcome is unmatched, so embrace that power, make the leap into the unknown, and rely on yourself. Even if it doesn't work out perfectly, you can always return, but you'll have gained invaluable experience from trying.
